Gestures series
I began working on tis series during a residency in Venice, Italy as my attempt to decode the meaning and significance of some of the gestures represented in the Byzantine iconography.
From the myriad of gestures one makes in a single day only a few came to be represented and withstood the centuries on the walls of cathedrals and churches. Being particularly interested in the pre-Renaissance forms of representation, especially Byzantine iconography, I have isolated a few gestures from San Marco Cathedral’s mosaics in order to see if they can stand alone and still remain meaningful for the contemporary viewer.
The monoprint process used to make these works gives me the flexibility of reproducing without copying because it inevitably distorts my drawing generating a new surprising image.
